The Myaamia Heritage Foundation aims to increase awareness and understanding of Myaamia history, language, and traditions through programs, events, and collaborative partnerships — both with departments within the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma and with non-Myaamia organizations.
The next project supported by the foundation is the Myaamia Cultural Fest, taking place on August 29, 2026, in downtown Fort Wayne, Indiana. This free, family-friendly event will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the corner of Barr and Berry Streets in collaboration with the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma’s Cultural Resources Office.
The Myaamia Cultural Fest offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience and celebrate Myaamia history, culture, language, and artistic traditions. Guests can participate in traditional Myaamia (Miami) games, learn about the Tribe’s rich heritage, and shop for authentic handmade artwork created by Myaamia artists.
Throughout the day, artists and cultural practitioners will provide live demonstrations and lead hands-on activities, allowing visitors to explore traditional art forms such as beadwork, basketry, and finger weaving. Attendees will even have the opportunity to create and take home their own finger-woven keychain.
Whether you are learning about the Myaamia people for the first time or reconnecting with their vibrant culture, the festival offers an engaging and educational experience for all ages.
Monetary support for the printing of two educational children’s books. These books, created by Myaamia artist Megan Sekulich, are aimed at teaching language to children within the Myaamia community. The MHF hopes that with the monetary support for printing such books, we are helping to facilitate the widespread dissemination of these publications. In the past, Miami Tribe of Oklahoma publications have reached thousands of households, and we believe that more publications such as these children’s books, help to solidify a future of culturally and linguistically knowledgeable Myaamiaki ‘Miami People.’
In August 2025, the MHF sponsored three Myaamia artists at the Taste of the Arts festival in Fort Wayne, Indiana. This event provided an important platform for Myaamia artists to gain recognition for their work, while also educating the broader community about what it means to be Myaamia and the significance of Myaamia art. Additionally, it allowed us to introduce the Tribe to residents of Fort Wayne and Northern Indiana. $3750 was donated to the Eugene Brown Memorial Art show at the Myaamia Heritage Museum and Archive. These funds were used in the form of prize money for Myaamia artists who won in their respective categories of art. This contribution, we hope, helps to encourage future growth of the Eugene Brown Memorial Art Show and the continued excellence of Myaamia artists and their productions.
